Patterned Papers

Stanley Hayter

A British painter and printmaker, Stanley Hayter was born in 1901 and died in 1988. He is credited with bringing printmaking into the 20th Century by using innovative techniques and new materials. Many other famous artists came to Hayter’s studio and were influenced by the way he worked including Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Stanley Hayter was more interested in developing his work than in self-promotion so he rarely exhibited.

Look at a variety of Hayter’s work with the children to give them ideas about the kind of marks they can make in the paint.

Sam Francis

Sam Francis was an American painter and printmaker. He served in the US Air Force in WW2 and it was after being injured in a plane crash that he became involved in Art.

Show several Sam Francis paintings to the children and discuss with them how he might have applied the paint to the paper or canvas. Looking closely like this will influence the way they apply the paint when making patterned papers.

Robert Delaunay

Delaunay was a painter who loved to experiment with bold colours. He started painting young and soon became confident and painted in a mature style. Delaunay’s paintings were an attempt to reproduce the rhythms of nature rather than its appearance. He worked on set design early in his career and returned to working in the theatre later in life where he collaborated with his wife Sonia.

Delaunay’s bold colours and shapes lend themselves to inspiring the children to experiment with colour and mark-making for their patterned papers.
